Hi I need to wire up a control plate into a Fender Jazz
Any ideas on exactly what I should be getting?
I found www.tonelounge.co.nz but haven't heard back from him

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
Can help you Foal, but need a bit more information. Is it the normal single coil pickups and passive vol/vol/tone control plate?
Also, assuming it the stock configuration, you can change the tone quite a bit by the capacitor you use. Do you know what you have on the control plate?

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
Will post a picture tonight with the wiring. Can you tell me what colours the wires from the pickups are? Are the white and black?
Re: Jazz Bass wiring
The "plastic thing" is the tone capacitor, a 0.22uF (microfarad), likely 200 volt, but the voltage rating doesn't matter.
If you need any electronics help, let me know, it's what I do to support my bass habit...

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
Here is a photo of an old Jazz bass control plate which you can see all of the wiring. The silver thing with "Tone factory" on it is the capacitor I replced the little "plastic thing" with. On my Jazz bass, each pickup had a white (live) wire and a black (earth) wire. The earths are just soldered onto the case of the appropriate pot, but everything is earthed together, so it doesn't really matter where you earth it.
For the live wire, connects to the centre lug on the pot - neck p/u to the front pot and bridge pickup to the middle pot. In the photo, the top lug is earthed onto the case, and the bottom lugs are connected together, so there shouldn't be any other wires going the lug that you put the pickup wire onto.
Hopefully that answers your question. If not, post a photo of your control plate and we'll be able to sort it.

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
The NZRS does not stock any wire for this type of job
Nev where did you get your supplies from?
I'm keen to use whatever Fender did which I think is what www.tonelounge.co.nz have but it not look the same as what's currently in thus Bass

I try www.guitarparts.co.nz first, and www.stewmac.com if they don’t have it. How much do you need. I might have enough for your re-wire sitting around in scraps. I assume you are after the vintage cloth covered wire?

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
Yes the cloth covered stuff Fender uses
I don't know how much I need but more than 1 entire Jazz Bass would be prudent
Guitar parts don't have it
Stew mac does

Re: Jazz Bass wiring
I have 35cm of white and 45cm of black 'vintage' cloth covered wired, both in single pieces. That should be enough to completely rewire a Jazz bass control panel. You are welcome to it if you want it. PM me you postal address if you want it
