i've always ummed and ahhed about the sansamp bass drivers, but am getting one of the programmable models to see if that fills my multi-grit requirement. hoping that at least with it i won't have to run my amp with as much preamp gain to get some grit.

i'm certainly not expecting the SVT tone, you only get that by pushing a bunch of poweramp tubes into saturation. but i can't be arsed moving that amount of weight around anymore.
never use the distortion! over at talkbass you can have a read at jmj's thoughts on the mxr m80. its got an awesome eq. i never use the distortion, maybe occasionally on the clean boost side of things. i had a go with it on a ric too, and it still did the job. the mxr also pretty much killed the sadowsky i got from definite about two weeks ago as well.

VT has been getting rave review every where. you can run the vt bass as a preamp... as it is supposed to be one. driving a power amp, or what not. i would do it into a DI box still. im keen to try a tonehammer tho

i bit the bullet and splurged on a VT Bass last week.

tone heaven! distortion heaven! this is what an SVT should sound like. huge amount (almost too much!) of output on tap. still coming to grips with the number of tones i can coax out of it, but so far solo and in a band setting it sounds great. definitely recommended, i'm glad i didn't go the Bass DI route.

now i wish they made a programmable version.
i like rickenbackers. and fridges.

Would it still be better to run it through a DI?
Yes, purely to give a balanced and correct impedence signal to the mic pre on the desk, and also to split your signal to your amp.

Really cool pedal, I'm loving mine.

I've finally decided on what I am going to get - I came to the conclusion I needed something a bit more kick arse than the Sansamp or MXR. I didn't really want a stomp box, and wanted something very versatile, so I'm saving up for a Phil Jones Bass Buddy.

Nice! Looks like it's half way between Sansamp/MXR pedal and a full head unit. Have you tried one out Ryan?

Look at what they are talking about over at Talkbass. It is the VT Bass pedal, but with 3 programmable channels, effects send/return, inputs for 2 basses and an XLR out. Don't know if it is real or not (I understand people can do amazing things with Photoshop  ), but would be pretty cool if it is!

No, I've got an Aguilar Tone Hammer coming. Irvinz had one and was really rapt with it. Sadly it hasn't arrived yet - it arrived a couple of hours late to be brought over from the US by my in-laws, so it is now in the post somewhere between the States and NZ

Personally, I'd play without DI unless the sound guy starts threatening to quit (I get frequent death threats, but if he threatens to quit he means it).

It's his fault for not letting me play amped.

Anyway, to answer OP, it's quite a good piece of hardware if you're playing DI'd. Good and dependable, but nothing that makes it stand out.

Not keen on sharing my low-frequency space with anyone else at the moment

Or maybe you could have two basses that you switch between

Oh, I couldn't cheat on my Jazz

Seriously, though, I never thought about that. Forget P/J, get both at once :D
