I remember when Cream first came out. They were certainly not your standard British Blues.
Rock perhaps with a touch of "Heavy" ( our word for Metal those days ) and then with a touch of blues, but most of their music was considered too furious and full of energy to be be Blues.
The blues influence was more from Clapton having been mentored by John Mayall.
Jack Bruce was classically trained on cello which is another factor to take into account.

I didn't say JB was only a blues bass player, but his lines are extremely blues bassed (he studied jazz... so of course they are, the blues and jazz are cousins after all).
