Well, looks like I have the bass chair now for King Snake.

I watched them play today at a blues gig and our own Sean ( BluesBass ) was filling in as pre-aranged. Nice job he did too, hope I can do as well.

Anyhow, King Snake have quite a few gigs ahead of them so it seams I'm going to be one very busy old fart.

Did my first gig with King Snake today at Huapai Tavern. There was a good crowd there and most of all, we had a lot of fun. These guys are great to play music with and like to entertain. Sean and Steve were right in their above posts.

There's a certain slight musical ragginess to their approach ( which I like alot ) and they're not your average clinical blues band. However, they certainly know how to please a crowd and that showed by us being paid an extra 60% of the promised fee for the day!

We've got booked gigs ahead of us and I have the feeling this band has a lot of potential.

So we may be coming to a town near you....soon!

Hard to explain really. To me ( not being a dedicated blues bassist ) I feel there needs to be a certain raggedness to the arrangement whilst maintaining a good level of musicianship and stiil being somehwat tight in the preformance. The Rolling Stones in their early LPs did this well on many occasions, partcularly in Aftermath.

In comparison, I have heard a lot of blues bands who play technically correct, have extremely tight arrangements, the raggedeness is just not there and they are overall very good musicians. I am not decrying that or putting it down in any way. I am just saying that to me, as more of a rock/ballad/country rock bassist, this feels a little clinical and thus doesn't appeal to my tastes as much. I guess also that the feeling of complete predictability comes to mind in my effort to explain 'clinical blues bands', whereas in King Snake, it's not so predictable.

Told ya that would be hard to explain!

Well I understood what you meant.
I only really know Rob and Kevin, and both of those guys have feel, can improvise well, bring dynamics to a performance and change the flavor of a song depending on how the mood takes them.

Gotta say I am enjoying playing bass for this group. Great bunch of musos, loads of fun when we play and heaps of compliments from the punters at the end of each set.

Just did a couple of gig at Kaiaua as part of Billy TK Jnr's "Blues on the bays" Festival and it was a blast. We're doing the Coromandel gig on Jan 6th as well. Maybe we'll see some of you BPNZERs there ?
