Wall Mount

Post by BrendonM » Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:17 am

Hi there,

as I get older I want to build a collection of basses. Guitars are classically thought of as modern art, some people buy them just to hang on the wall even if they can't play. As a bassist I want to have a music room one day which features a wall of basses.
At this stage I have 5 basses... I have 2 of those triple stands which are very handy, but eventually I want to hang these basses up. My considerations at this point are that the wall should never get direct sunlight on it and that the hanger should be affixed to a stud. My questions are:
Does anybody currently wall hang their basses?
What type or brand of hanger do you use?
I see one currently on trademe at:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Music-instrume ... 718217.htm
What other considerations would you have for such a wall?

I am assuming that this approach is not unhealthy for basses because large stores and guitar collections seem to hang basses all the time.
cheers

I'd be too afraid as I've seen one get knocked of those holders.
I like leaving mine in it's case to limit exposure to temperature change, humidity, sunlight etc.

How do think a wall of guitar cases would look? :P

Absolutely incredible. The Rock shop bar has their collection of guitars on the walls, inside flight cases with glass fronts, its really quite cool.

All my instruments are kept in their cases and hidden from sight. I know what you mean by the cool factor, but I also know too many people who have been burgled... if they can see/access them quickly, that's just more likely they'll go!

WTF - the Rockshop has a bar? awesome!

man, burglars suck. We were robbed once but thankfully they never took my music gear. Since then we have alway had security systems in place with monitoring and have encouraged our neighbours to look out for each other by looking out for them. You raise a very good point though.

I agree with your points here too, particularly in light of the cost and desired longevity of ones instruments.

I really appreciate your thoughts here and am keen to hear more thoughts on this, or from people who may have done something similar. I will be waiting till my kids get bigger and we have a larger more appropriate home.
cheers

This is clearly an issue for you townies.. :D And i know god says forgive us our tresspassers.... but i dont. I SHOOT THE BASTARDS! LOL
But seriously thats somthing i should be more paranoid about... i generally dont lock my house.... i lost the key shortly after moving in. And somthing my keys player points out every time he comes round, he lived in auckland for a while. I will definatly work on being paranoid :D And yea im a stand guy.... or on the couch.... or on the armchair.

In a case under the bed has always been a safe place. After being robbed a year ago and noticing that the scumbag had tried to pull my favorite bass out from under the bed but failed (apparently lifting the bed to get it was too much effort). But in saying that there is nothing like being able to just pick it up off a stand and start playing anytime.

And heres a thought, if youre gonna put them on stands on the wall, itd be easy enough to make racks that are lockable like a rifle rack. Surly someone has done it? But if they havnt wouldnt be hard to do. And make them more or less invisible... with the rack only being length of the body, hooked twin bracket on bottom, and a locking brase at base of neck! Itd be brilliant!

Ah, the Fitzroy Tavern. Played there many a time. We backed Bunny Walters there and he didn't turn up for the Friday afternoon run through.

Didn't turn up until 2 hours past start time at night. So pissed he could hardly stand, let alone sing. Really, really embarassing.

On the Saturday night there was no sign of him at all. We spend all night apologising for him, even though we had nothing to do with him - we were just the local backing band.

One of the most unprofessional 'talents' I ever worked with.

I hear he's clean these days.
