Jansen RS1420M Preamp

Alas, the preamp of my vintage 1978 HH Electronics combo is crapping out, but the power amp section is still fine. Thinking that it might be time to go for separate components, has anyone out there have any opinions on this Jansen preamp. I fancy the built in compressor/limiter, but is it any good? These units come up once or twice a year on TM. Does anyone have one sitting in a cupboard or stored away somewhere? I remember seeing one in the K Rd RS about 25-30 years ago and thought then that I wanted one. Long term GAS. Your thoughts please.

I had one way back in the eighties, played it into a Perreaux power amp IIRC and a couple of JBL E140s. The tone controls were adequate but not particularly effectively voiced, and while it did the job I cannot recall it as ever setting my world on fire (although that may also have been my limited playing skills at the time  ).
Solidly built and reliable, but things have come a long way since then. I don't know what your budget is, but since you are going second hand I would suggest looking for an SWR Grand Prix or Pearce preamp from around the same era. I have used both and either would be a step up from the Jansen.
Just IMO, I hope it helps.

Thanks for your input. I've not ever knowingly heard the Jansen preamp, just thought it might have been an overlooked future classic. There is a Jansen Crusader Magnum 220 in my price range that could fit the bill even better.

I have the crusader 440 which is basically the 220 preamp with 2 of the power amps. It's a bl**dy good amp if you don't mind the weight.
I really love the filter knob which is a high pass filter. Every amp should have one

Thanks John. I don't think it'll be quite as heavy only having one power amp, but that's no problem. The auction finishes Tuesday night, so here's hoping.

Just an update, I've just rejoined the Jansen club again. My first proper bass amp was a Jansen Blackface Bassamp 100 (or Bassman 100, can't remember, but it was built on tag strips - no circuit boards iirc) back in the mid '80s. Found out that the special components holding the special smoke in can be dissolved with beer. Nobody seemed to be able to fix valve gear back then and it was eventually skipped. It would have been worth holding on to. Anyway, just picked up a Jansen Crusader 220 Magnum head for $200 off TM. Not too heavy at all - easily carried in one hand. Sounds great so far, with lotsa knobs to fiddle with, and 2 channels to dial in both my basses for different sounds. Now just have to decide how to fix my HH.

Nice one Pablo
My Bass Tutor in the late 80's had a Crusader with Mesa 15".
Big bottom.

Great price. It really is a great amp and the guy who designed it still works at Jansen, which is pretty cool

Update. Got a new speaker for the HH from Jansen, a Zomax P1550. This replaces an Eminence OEM POS I bought to fill the hole. TBH it was from a PA cab. I found out last weekend that I could lift the magnet off the frame of the Eminence. Not good. So in goes the Zomax, and already lovin' it. The HH Head still crackles, so gotta fix it, but with the Crusader 220 I dialled in a great tone with my Kramer 250B on channel 1. I think it's going to take more work with my DMZ5000 on channel 2 to get something I'm happy with. The Di Marzio P pickup seems to be weak now, might have to break out my DOD FX42B graphic EQ to help out.
