Adding a sub into your rig/using the PA sub.

Just wondered if anyone could share their experiences re this. I'm in the process of organising a semi-large gig for next month and will most likely have a sub at my disposal in the PA lineup.

I've been told by a lot of people in the know that mixing drivers (i.e. pairing a 15" or a 12" with 10" drivers) is a bad idea. Although my rig has a lot of low end, I was thinking that in a big gig situation the addition of a sub could be very worthwhile to handle the super low frequencies. My amp has a sub-out (1/4", line level). I was wondering if anyone had any experience adding a subwoofer into their rig and what the end result was... too boomy? just right?

True, but that sub should be part of the PA, not your stage rig. To do so you DI your rig to the PA board.

I already DI from my amp into the desk. My question really is; what would be the point of having a sub out on my amp then? (It's an Ashdown ABM Evo II 500).

Probably no point on your on stage rig, as this is your monitor only and would have no effect on the front of house sound (what the audience hears). Let the PA (sound reinforcement system) do all the work. As long as you have a good sound man it will sound good.

It would be useful if your main speaker was insufficient to drive the stage by itself and you always needed the assistance of a sub.
