One of my favourite recognisable bass riffs is Dancin' in the Moonlight, by Thin Lizzy. Most people recognise it immediately, although they can't always name the song of course.

Peaches by The Stranglers is another very cool and recognisable one . Love that riff. Actually, great bass tone on the album too, come to think of it (Stranglers IV - Rattus Norvegicus).

She's got me going... up and down."

trainspotter foal says both of the two examples listed by AlanP are tuned down to Eb

I'll return to my knitting presently.

Really? I always assumed they were in standard tuning, but I don't know if I've ever played along to the record of either of those, so I couldn't be sure. Or at least haven't played along to them since I can remember - Peaches was about the first thing I ever learned, so we're going back a ways, lol. Got shown it by a mate, and man was I pleased with it at the time.

I am not good at this sort of thing but I find the intro to 'Wherever I lay my hat' which, I can get close enough to the original to be recognised, works well. Playing on the fretless and with chorus / octaver is really required to get the whole Pino Vibe thing going on and generally I am playingfretted whenever I get asked.

If they are in Eb - great - another reason i play a 5 sting , nice having the flexibility - but in an ideal world id definrtly like to reunite with my formative 4 stringers - Steinberger L2 - Stingray vintage and Rickenbacker etc, to digress ,id love to hop on the upright and really feel the earth move, - but back to the topic - if someone made a request it would depend on who was asking - as players we win by giving what listeners need - ideally we can indulge ourselves at the the same time ,if it meets both needs your on a winner - personally id ask for a request, then play off of that - id play a zep line if thats where there coming from, or a bach thing just to surprise some peope who dont think bass guitarists go there - its the two-way trip play both for yourself and the listener and trying to reach a common ground. The best way to figure it out is to go busking - then you really work out what to offer the public with solo bass. However, with as we are primarily accompanists, its fruitful to explain (endlessly) that its not really what we do - " come see the band"- how does a drummer feel when people ask them to play something

Is this something you've done ryla? Anyone else ever busked on the street playing nothing but a bass?

We should offer a prize to anyone who video's themselves playing an embarrassing song (of our choice) in public. Over and over until someone gives them money... Haha.

*Goes to itunes to search for suitable song*
