Pick Technique from Finger Plucking

Post by discoboat » Fri Sep 12, 2008 2:14 pm

I've been playing for 9 months or so, and am very comfortable finger plucking. Every time I try and use a pick I can't get the precision or speed that I want though. The problem is that I pick too deep, rather than hitting the tip of the pick.

I've searched for tips and pick techniques but have not found anything that useful. Can anyone give any tips or exercises to achieve more accurate pick playing?

You probably have identified already a technique issue.

Possibly regiment practice time into sections or exercises that have to be done with the plectrum. Just the discipline of doing it, putting in the time.

For fundamentals try using a light pick (.6/.73)
open string exercise, add left hand muting, then try it with right hand palm mute.

Once this is getting good note attack/articulation go to a heavy pick and do 8th note lines with up and downstrokes. See how the pick is now doing the work. Try not to grab the plectrum, more "touch" it.

It took me years to get into using a pick and I still work on pick specific exercises. The hardest point is possibly getting over yourself, in that I can play all this *BANNED* with my fingers yet my pick work sucks. It's all practice, if you want to do it you can etc...

Have a go at holding the pick so that the point is pointing at the headstock and use the edge of the pick instead. I've found this helps to keep the pick nice and shallow in the strings.
