Re: is it worh to custom for a FENDER STD USA P BASS?

Basic recipe here is the maple and ash/alder regardless of jazz-ness or p-bassness. Pickups will make a difference but not change the resonance of the wood. If you ever find a p-bass you like the sound of then stick a j pup in it if you're convinced that is all you'll ever need. The combo worked for...

Re: Gonna kill my keyboardist! Any comments before he dies?

Whats the point of civilised conversation when a few short, sharp jabs to the head will achieve the same outcome?

Re: Anyone G.A.S free?

I'm pretty much gas free...mainly because I'd have to import anything that took my fancy from the US and I no longer have the disposable income I used to have pre-recession. But I have all the basses I need so I'm content with what I have, plus have enough spare parts to have custom made a few instr...

Same here!
The HS sound louder and softer depending on the pickup settings. Its a voltage/impedance issue that is common with coil splitting.

Still, I think its great because the team will know more about them when I am trying new equipment out or if I have a problem with my ray etc..
I'd suggest it means you'd LOSE less if you wanted to sell.

What kind of paint was used for the illustrations? Was it enamel modellers paint?

Re: NZ bass string suppliers

If their piezos work properly, probably the bog standard kind. :) Part of the problem I have is that the guy who made this bass filed the graphtec saddles down, against their advice. He's got some replacements but has taken nearly a year to send them through...

Re: Quick question: finishes to instruments

I had mine sprayed by car painters several times and every time was a good finish (never a run). However the best finish for me has been by Adrian from Ash Customworks in jafaland who refinned my P in nitro and made a brilliant job and surprised me totally by opening out the sound. I guess the car ...

Re: Quick question: finishes to instruments

He and I really like wild looking wood, especially native wood. Plus he's literally in the next bay over from me on the peninsula. I traded him a piece of perfectly quarter sawn quilted redwood which he was salivating over in exchange for that guitar body too. He'll make it out of native beech - sil...

Re: Quick question: finishes to instruments

I have a friend in the US who decided to start buliding guitars from scratch a couple of years ago (I think he is up to serial number 8). He sprays the finish himself, and he said that the layers are so thin that you can only just see that the wood has got wet. I assume you are looking for someone ...

Re: Quick question: finishes to instruments

I'd imagine a custom paint shop would do a high enough standard of paint finish but whether they use paints that are flexible enough for wood once dried is something I'd like to confirm. Also, the mirror gloss requires a lot of going over with 2400 grit wet and dry. Not something that car painters t...

Quick question: finishes to instruments

Where do luthiers and repairmen get their finishes done usually in NZ? Do they go to somewhere that specialises in fine furniture finishes or have they managed to find car shops that do a good enough standard?

Re: NZ bass string suppliers

thanks for that Marty. Suppliers in the US have told me the same thing. Its unfortunate because if they were more freely available I'd buy them more regulary than I do. The bass they're for is probably only going to be used for recording now, specifically because of the string supply issue although ...
