Re: String recommendation

45-105s for drop C#? Have you considered trying a set that's 110 or 115 for the low string? I play in Eb with 45-105s (ie your tuning without dropping the low) and it's still ok, but if I was dropping the Eb I'd want a thicker string...

Re: Anybody Have A Jansen Bassman?

The 100 watt tube ones are pretty rare, most of the 100s had solid state power amps.

50s and 75s come up on trademe pretty often, sure 100 watts is probably better for bass but I've never had any problems in loud bands with my 50...

Re: What to try now?

When most people say "CRC" they mean the diesel smelling stuff which is the same as WD40. Don't spray this into your pots. CRC actually make heaps of stuff, including contact cleaner and switch cleaning lubricant. They come with a thin nozzle attachment so you can easily spray a little bit down the ...

Re: Suitable Mic's for Micing a Bass Amp

I have one I'm thinking about selling actually, nice mic but I often find myself using other things in the studio. In perfect condition and I'd want $500 for it, if I sell it :D

Re: Suitable Mic's for Micing a Bass Amp

Not a heap of options in that budget, and I wouldn't get too carried away as the mic placement can make just as much difference as changing the mic. Also my experience of mixing in venues of up to 300ish capacity is that once the bass player is comfortable with their stage level you may not even nee...

Re: Tech21 Sansamp Bass driver - Love 'em or hate 'em?

So what does the Leeds sound like Timi? Where do you use it? Based on a Hiwatt rather than Ampeg but it sounds pretty similar to the VT, just a bit smoother in the top end and not as scoopy, but you probably couldn't pick it in the context of a mix. I've "got my tone" on the pedal by running it int...

Re: Tech21 Sansamp Bass driver - Love 'em or hate 'em?

I've used the VT and Leeds a bunch, pretty cool but one thing that always bothered me was they can be a bit harsh and clanky in the top end (especially the VT). Last night I realized I was always going through my TU2 first, tried going straight in and suddenly all the harshness went away. Can't beli...

Re: Opinion on Orange bass heads?

I've owned mine for about 6 years, but it hasn't had heavy use and isn't getting moved around much, plus it's pretty damn loud so I'm not driving it that hard. I'm still on the originals but I had an output tube blow a few years back but was able to get a used replacement that matched pretty close s...

Re: Bass colours

I've seen quite a few '70s Fender basses online in that color, plus saw some new US Standard ones in a matte mocha recently.

Re: Christchurch visit.

Well there's at least one SSL near Auckland (Revolver Studios in Waiuku), but Quicksand looks pretty cool from the few pics I could find on facebook. Keen to know how their rooms sound.

Re: Use guitar pedals for bass?

They all "work" but many cut low end to varying degrees, at least most overdrives do. That can be a problem if you need to switch it off and on, but if you leave on the whole time it might sound ok to just boost the low end on the amp to compensate. As Zero says you might not notice it at bedroom vo...
