Re: Assembly/Build advice

Asher? Is that Ash or Alder?

The dollar vs the dollar has improved recently, so $150 for a new lefty bass body is pretty darn cheap. If you want to go local though, I highly suggest sending a pm to ash.

The best thing about playing lefty bass

The best thing about playing lefty bass is that none of those randoms can randomly jam with your bass when you aren't around (that's my pet hate - people touching my stuff). Even a lot of lefties play righty bass. I'm tempted to get a "gigging" lefty bass, just to discourage those annoying people wh...

Re: Loving being the bassist again!!

I have always thought the same thing, keep it simple. With modern equipment everything is so light and compact. Soon the heaviest piece of kit will be your bass  Good to catch up with ya Pins! Your taste in amplification is as good as mine... Unfortunately for my back, my taste in amplifi...

Re: I need advice on buying a bass in New Zealand, I'm frenc

How about a Japanese Fender?

New Caledonia ain't that far (I think?), and a lot of used Fender basses leave Japan, so the Japanese music stores (Ishibashi in particular) are pretty familiar with international shipping.

Course, there's always that extra language barrier...

Re: Bad news & good news

Ironically, Jazz, the Fender Jazz turned 50 this year as well.

I think a lot of New Zealand's Rick 4001 players are going to be very, very jealous.

...I have yet to break a bass guitar string in um... er... about 30 years of playing... Is it actually possible? You could probably hang someone with bass strings and not worry too much about them falling to the ground (don't get all suspicious, I haven't tried this... yet...) On the other hand, I ...

I wonder how some slap 'n' pop (slap 'n' twang?) would sound on that monstrosity.

It's not "taken away", it's just a different tone - like the difference between Humbuckers and Single coils.

Very helpful. I like halfrounds and flatwounds myself.

Re: Rusty pick up, how do you treat them?

A friend of mine recommends scrubbing them with those green pad things you use for scouring pans, then coating them with some high-quality nail polish. I don't know where us guys are meant to find high-quality nail polish (that stuff is available in different qualities?) but there we go. Ask the mis...

Re: Whammy bar

I believe Hipshot makes some rather decent Bass trems - never used one myself. Off the top of my head they are a Bass-sized version of the Stratocaster trem, so I doubt installing one is a walk in the park by anyone's standards. So yes, it can be done, but not easily. As a bassist who blocked his St...

Funny story (for me)!

My mate put a couple of subs into his car a while ago. Knowing I'm a bassist, he comes along and makes a bet with me. I get $500 if I blow it up, he gets $100 if I can't (seeing as It's pretty biased in my favor, it's obvious where his confidences lie). Came over, plugged a headphone output into his...
