Re: Teaser - next project

Mahogany binding done all the way around. I've given it a coat of french polish (contains shellac) to show the warmth of colour it will end up with. I also shows me where I need to do some more sanding. The neck is now properly mounted. Starting to look real good!

Re: Teaser - next project

It is mahogany. Spoils my brief to user on NZ natives, but it is recycled and it is so thin I’ve granted myself an exemption

Re: Teaser - next project

Got to keep the momentum going and get it finished! Here I've done a test bend on an off-cut of veneer. The radius on the horn is pretty tight. Boiling for 5 minutes softens it nicely. I think there is a little fault in the veneer on the bottom which has lifted off. Should be fine so long as I do a ...

Re: Teaser - next project

A long overdue update. Just on photo but it shows a lot of progress. I wasn’t happy with the join line between top and bottom so decided to ‘bind’ it with some mahogany veneer I found. It’s less than 1mm thick so had to get a special router bit to cut a channel for it. It wasn’t too hard to bend to ...

Re: New 'bass' day - NS designs cello

Yes, the fret markers have really helped me get started. The scale length is pretty comfortable for my long fingers, but the tuning in 5th makes for some crazy stretches. I’m at my in-laws in the US for a couple of weeks, so haven’t had any opportunity to play it in public yet. Got some work to do b...

Re: New 'bass' day - NS designs cello

Well, self praise is no recommendation, but.... I think I am getting a pretty good sound out of it using my fingers. However, The bow is another story altogether! I can hold a note OK without hitting other string too much, and I can give some nice vibrato, but try to do that together and the w...

New 'bass' day - NS designs cello

Felt like I needed a new challenge, so battling a shortened scale, tuning in 5ths and getting a bow to make the strings sing. But on the odd occasion that I play a note well it sounds really good. It is a 5 string with a low F, so it can work as a short scale electric upright bass.

Wow  That is a wall of GK goodness! The two speaker covers on the 4x12 make it look like two cabs, but I guess that isn't the case.

Re: Show us your pedals

That's quite a pedalboard! The two wireless units are presumably so you can run two basses and the red pedal switches between them? What is the silver/white pedal in the front row with the red demon picture on it?

Neck on for the first time today! :D Mounted the hardware to see how it feels. It seems to be pretty nicely balanced, so very happy with that. Still a lot of work to go on the body, but today was a great day!

Re: Teaser - next project

Controls all wired up now. Just need to add in the wires to the pickups and the ground to the bridge. I got some nice vintage style wired (with a braided sheath) in the kit with the pots. Looks and feels great, but was a pain to strip.
