Where can I buy nitrocellulose lacquer in NZ?

Post by Tim1 » Sun Jun 07, 2015 6:52 pm

Somebody here might be able to help me. I have just rewound a pre-cbs jazz bass pickup and to be period correct I should pot it in nitrocellulose lacquer. Unfortunately they won't ship nitrocellulose lacquer outside the United States and I cannot find a place down here that lists it. I only need abut a jam jar full to soak the pickup in for a few minutes. Could go acrylic or poly lacquer but aside from that not being "right", nitro is more flexible when set. It must be available somewhere since our luthiers do use it.

I would try contacting a luthier and asking them where to get it. I also done a quick google search and found http://www.timberlywoodturning.co.nz/pr ... 30%25.html Never heard of the company Timberly Woodturning before though but appear to be an NZ based company

Thanks for that. It has also given me the idea of trying a local wood turner.

I got some in a spray can from a paint store here in Dunedin. I'll find the product name for you when I get home.

I think that information would be liquid gold to many of us, thanks Joppo. Not just for my pickup but for all those who occasionally want to touch up a nitro finish.

Mmmm - I need to do a little more research for you Tim. I have found that can, and it has the following on the label

849-2-12000
Precat
Clear

I got it from Rainbow Paint in Dunedin. I had an acoustic guitar to finish and I said to my luthier (Steve Barkman) that I wanted to do a nitrocellulose finish. He told me to go to Rainbow Paint and gave me a product number. They had it in bulk and put a small quantity (300ml) it into a spray can for me. However, I have just googled the stuff on the label (which it didn't find), but "precat" is short for Pre-catalysed lacquer which isn't exactly the same as nitrocellulose. I'll see if I can get to the paint store today and ask them about it.

All good, joppo. I will be giving Timberly Woodturning a call tomorrow as they look like the best bet so far.

Sorted! :D I have the Technical Data Sheet for nitrocellulose lacquer. The product name is 262 Speedlac (PGG Industries Industrial Coatings). They had it in stock in Rainbow Paint in Dunedin so shouldn't be too hard to get. You can get it in a small can, which is what I assume you are after Tim, but there is no problem putting it into an aerosol can for those who want to spray it on but don't have a spray gun.

For those who are interested, the Precat finish is quite similar to a nitrocellulose finish in its properties. Precat is a little bit more durable, but Nitocellulose can be coloured.

PM me your email address Tim and I'll scan and email the data sheet to you.

I don't know if anyone has checked (I most certainly have not), but Nitro Lacquer was/is the "official" classic car finish and so, it would seem likely to be able to find it in places that specilaise in automotive paints.

Now, modern automotive paints are more likely to be acrylics or urethanes, so you might have to track down places that cater to classic autos.

I'll admit, all of my knowledge on automotive paints comes from the U.S. so what's available might be quite different here in NZ. Nitrocelluloce lacquer is rather flammable so there may be some serious issues with shipping it here. Of course it's far less flammable than petrol, but the demand may be too small for anyone to bother...

I ended up getting some from Timberley Wood Turning, thanks very much Bronze. They were very helpful and it should be here by the weekend. Despite Joppo messaging very kindly messaging me all the details the local paint shop girls still looked pretty blank so Timberley seemed the way to go.

I looked up the website. Is that clear or tinted? It didn't say.

I think it is clear, Marty. Either way it won't matter for the purpose I am using it. By the way, I now have a pickup winder available if anyone in the Bay wants to use it.
