Top bass lines of all time ...

Post by NZRS-Dave » Wed Jan 26, 2011 7:51 am

Guys,

I've had a quick look through the forum but can't see where you guys have fought tooth and nail, and shed blood in quest for the top basslines of all time.

I've been kicking around an idea of writing a book ... so I am doing some research on bass stuff that influenced people. I write a bit (and have had some very minor publishing success but no you can't read it) so I have had the idea for a while ... but when it comes to jazz and funk genres ... I'm a bit screwed because it's not my specialty.

It'll will probably not get to a book, cos the music tuition book racket is hard to crack.

I also wanted to look at bass lines that you wouldn't ordinarily list as a great bass song ... like the bass line to Sade - Smooth Operator ... bass solo at 1:48. It's a bad version, but Sony have disabled embedding on the official video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERpjTWWUV6w

If there is a thread, please point it out to me. And how the heck do you embed a video?

I love that bass solo Dave. The bassist is Paul Denman and he makes a Stingray sound sooooooo smooth! Here's how to embed a vid. Hit the "Quote" button on my post and you will see how to use the "youtube" tags

Impossible to answer, but for me... my most favourite line and the one that got me interested in the bass is David Hood's line and solo on The Staple Singer's "I'll Take You There".

It's a simple line, but gut bucket funk, and the solo is just perfect... absolute lesson in playing for the song.

Is it the best bass line of all time?
Maybe not, but you won't find a bass track better than that.

Every single one of those is an awesome choice!

Wow ... cool list so far. I should have called the thread 'stand out bass lines' or 'bass lines of note' rather than top bass lines.

I am surprised that everyone like the Sade suggestion ... usually when I mention it people's eyes just glaze over. I must be amongst kin.

I was trying to find something by the big names like Billy Sheehan, Stu Hamm, Victor Wooten etc ... oooo Cliff Burton should get a mention in there as well.

I shall add them to the melting pot and to the generous soul he posted the YT correct posting message - ta.

Apparently so cool new bass stuff arrived today from Warwick. Will have a look trhough and see what there is.

Marty, you probably know Bruce Lynch?
I played with him in the '60s and he nailed that solo note for note. Impressed the hell out of me at the time.
Back then, no-one bothered with note perfect stuff, but Bruce did.

Dan... you are quite obviously a man of exquisite taste and vast intelligence.
Jazzbass... I used to know Bruce casually when I lived in OrcLand. I play Nivram but certainly not note for note. Jet Harris was a criminally overlooked bassist. He came from a jazz background and played some great stuff, if you listen to early Shadows the bass tends to be more inventive than after he left.

To embed, just take the last part of the link, so if the original link is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqd-JQgb6-I - just take the bit after the = sign, in this case- Pqd-JQgb6-I , and put it in between the code when you press the youtube button in the reply window.

I'll fix it for ya for now :)
